Benni McCarthy Apologetic For Reaction To Foul On Teko
Benni McCarthy explained his reaction towards Ajax Cape Town’s Isaac Nhlapho, saying that his team have worked hard to get Teko Modise back to full fitness.
The City head coach was infuriated after a foul on his veteran midfielder, Modise, during the Citizens’ 2-0 win over Ajax in the Cape Town derby on Saturday, September 30.
Speaking in a post-match press conference on Saturday, McCarthy revealed that emotions got the better of him during the game, saying that he should have been the bigger person but he was just concerned about Modise.
"There was a couple of nasty incidents where I thought I also overreacted a bit, but yeah I am one of those guys. I always say, a team is a reflection of its manager, I am a passionate guy, I am from Cape Town and if people want to bully my players or my teammate, I am the first one to stand up for them. So that was one of the situations that I think, as a coach, as a manager you got to deal with it a little bit better.
“I don’t box players, ah it is the emotions of the game, and sometimes it happens. For me as a concerned coach, because we have worked so hard just to get Teko back and then because he is a little bit agile and trickery and for players to just come and think that they can use him for a punching bag or a kicking bag, so I took it a little bit hard,” McCarthy told the media.
“So that’s why I said to him to worry about the ball and not the player and in the heat of the moment, it happens and when you are 2-0 down, emotions do get the better of you. I should have been the bigger person but, I was more concerned for my player because he just came back from injury and I know how hard he has worked and what it took for him to be on the pitch and for someone out of anger to snap at him and you end up losing him and then I am the one stuck with the problem of missing a key player."
