Bucs Net Late To Sink Benni's CT City

Absa Premiership Report: Orlando Pirates v Cape Town City 19 September 2017

By Soccer Laduma - Sep 19, 2017 09:22 PM
Absa Premiership

Reesult: Orlando Pirates 1-0 Cape Town City

Date: 19 September 2017

Venue: FNB Stadium

Thabo Qalinge struck late in the second half to earn Orlando Pirates a 1-0 win over Cape Town City on Tuesday evening.

The game got off to a slow start, but Pirates should have taken the lead after 10 minutes although Musa Nyatama blazed over from six-yards out.

It proved to be a busy opening 20 minutes for Pirates goalkeeper Wayne Sandilands, as he produced a few good saves to deny the likes of Lyle Lakay and Ayanda Patosi.

The tempo of the first half simmered down midway through the stanza, with both sides struggling to carve out chances.

City thought they had the ball in the net after 33 minutes, but Lehlohonolo Majoro's goal was ruled out for a foul on Sandilands.

The final 10 minutes of the second half proved to be a dull affair, with neither side posing any threat as they went into the break scoreless.

City opted for a change at the start of the second half as Letsie Koapeng replaced Roland Putche.

Pirates coach Milutin Sredojevic opted for a change of his own after 51 minutes as 17-year-old Lyle Foster replaced Bernard Morrison.

Chances were few and far between in the opening 15 minutes of the second half, as both sides were sloppy in possession of the ball.

Benni McCarthy then opted for a double change in the 70th minute as Victor Obinna and Edmilson were brought on for Majoro and Patosi.

Pirates eventually broke the deadlock in the 82nd minute when Foster lifted the ball to the far post, where Thabo Qalinge was on hand to tap home.

City pushed for an equaliser in the closing stages but the Buccaneers managed to hold out to claim the win.

The win sees Pirates move top of the Absa Premiership standings while the Citizens have dropped to seventh.

Here's how they lined up:

Pirates: 40. Sandilands, 4. Jele, 34. Nyauza, 21. Maela, 28. Dube, 11. Matlaba, 14. Nyatama, 15. Qalinge, 5. Makola, 3. Lorch (Memela 76'), 12. Morrison (Foster 51').

City: 1. Walters, 2. Mkhize, 12. Fielies, 16. Johannes, 6. Seedat, 23. Matsi, 19. Putsche (Koapeng 46'), 26. Nodada, 7. Lakay, 10. Patosi (Edmilson 70'), 45. Majoro (Obinna 70').

we need to admit we needed Gabuza yesterday to deal with the strength of Johannes , if Rakhale was fit should come in for Makola, still no confident in jele, overall gud game.

we need to admit we need Gabuza upfront, Johannes was bouncing our strikers, if Rakhale was fit should have come in for lazy Makola, cant wait to c him playing with Qalinge and Lorch.still no confident in Jele,Mobara and Shitolo better option, Matlaba new position much better not left back or rite, overall gud game, well done pois.

We played in patches yesterday, that's a little worrying. To be honest both teams should have shared the spoils in my view. Nyatama in that defensive midfield position looks a little out of his depth. If Sangweni is not back we will need Matlaba to take up the defensive midfield duties rather. Makola was a little flat as well, maybe he needs to start off the bench and let Kutumela start the game. I do not think we had an number 9 on the pitch yesterday till they introduced Forster. I'm glad that Gabuza was not in the game yesterday. Otherwise the technical team was spotton with the starting eleven and the subs. Great job, you can tell we have a tech team that really applies their minds
