Pirates Drop Points At Table-Topping Maritzburg

Absa Premiership Report: Maritzburg United v Orlando Pirates 15 September 2017

By Soccer Laduma - Sep 15, 2017 09:58 PM
Absa Premiership

Result: Maritzburg United 0-0 Orlando Pirates

Date: 15 September 2017

Venue: Harry Gwala Stadium

Orlando Pirates and Maritzburg United had to settle for a share of the spoils, as they played out a 0-0 draw at the Harry Gwala Stadium.

Maritzburg looked threatening in the early stages with Siphesihle Ndlovu causing a couple problems down left flank.

The hosts nearly went ahead on 15 minutes when Ndlovu broke through, but Happy Jele popped up with a fine block to deny the forward, who had the goal at his mercy.

The game turned into a scrappy after after 25 minute, which was mostly down to the conditions and that led to a lack of clear-cut chances.

Wayne Sandilands came to Pirates' rescue five minutes later, as he produced a good save to keep out Evans Rusike's effort.

Ndolvu continued to threaten and he went close five minutes before the break, but his volley sailed just wide of the upright.

Pirates did go close five minutes before the break, but Richard Ofori produced two good saves to deny Thabo Matlaba and Thamsanqa Gabuza from close range.

Pirates coach Milutin Sredojevic opted for a change on the hour mark, as Bernard Morrison made way for Thabo Rakhale.

The Team Of Choice looked more threatening as the half went on, with Lebohang Maboe going close with a low strike in the 75th minute.

With 10 minutes remaining, Sredojevic introduced Thembinkosi Lorch for Thabo Qaline as they went in search of a winner.

Maritzburg finished the game with 10 men after Ndlovu was sent off for picking up his second yellow card.

Nevertheless, 0-0 was how the game ended as the sides were forced to settle for a share of the spoils.

Here's how they lined up:

Maritzburg: 31. Ofori, 3. Sanoka, 25. Xulu, 16. Fransman, 5. Weidlich, 26. Shandu, 28. Mekoa, 8. Ndlovu, 15. Maboe, 36. Kunene (Makaring 57'), 19. Rusike.

Pirates: 40. Sandilands, 45. Mobara, 4. Jele, 34. Nyauza, 21. Maela, 28. Dube, 11. Matlaba, 14. Nyatama, 12. Morrison (Rakhale 57'), 15. Qalinge (Lorch 77'), 31. Gabuza.

Bidvest Wits official and a goal scorer and some of the players celebrated right in Chiefs spactators and pointing at them was very WRONG. That in itself could have brought havoc.

I did not want to comment today. George Lebese says that ordinary players were paid more that him and were getting game time. I dont know who he refered to as "ordinary players" - I suspect its Chirambandare, Maluleka, Thwala to name just those.
