Gustavo Paez was on target twice as Kaizer Chiefs defeated Maritzburg United 2-0 to end the Team of Choice's unbeaten run.
After an evenly-balanced opening minutes of the game it was Maritzburg United who threatened to open the scoring on the night.
Cameroon international Yazid Atouba struck a free kick towards the Kaizer Chiefs goal but saw his set piece deflect and unsettle Itumeleng Khune. The keeper however managed to readjust his position and made a good clearance off the line.
That opportunity sparked the game to life and in Chiefs’ next attack, influential player Simphiwe Tshabalala played a delightful chip over the Maritzburg defense. The ball found Bhongolethu Jayiya whose effort ricocheted into the path of striker Gustavo Paez who fired the ball into an empty net.
Yazid Atouba tested the goal of Itumeleng Khune once more with a stroke from outside the box but found the Chiefs number one alert as he deflected the effort for a Maritzburg corner.
The Team of Choice were on the ascendency and were looking for an equaliser before half time. Evans Rusike struck a free kick just outside the box and the slippery ball was spilled Khune and cleared away by Lorenzo Gordinho.
Deolin Mekoa tried a long range effort as well which demanded Khune’s attention. The ball bounced in front of the stopper and was again repelled away from danger to keep Chiefs ahead going into half time.
After being pinned back and having to defend their lead, Chiefs doubled their lead after 57 minutes through a deflected goal. Man of the moment Gustavo Paez got on the end of a corner and fired his shot towards goal via a deflection on Siyanda Xulu.
Maritzburg United had an opportunity to pull one back through a penalty that was taken by Evans Rusike. The decision to give the penalty was questionable to begin with and one would argue that justice was served as Khune once again saved to ensure Chiefs maintained their 2-0 lead.
Chiefs held on to secure a 2-0 away victory and a welcome clean sheet.
