Innocent Nemukondeni had a great chance in the seventh minute to grab the lead for the Urban Warriors but Polokwane goalkeeper, George Chigova made a brilliant save to deny him from the edge of the box.
Play was interrupted somewhat as after the 17th minute rain started to pour heavily at the Cape Town Stadium.
Chigova and Nemukondeni had another duel in the half-an-hour mark, with the Rise and Shine goalkeeper coming out tops again to save from point blank range.
Stanley Menzo's charges were taking the game to the visitors as they dominated their final third but were unlucky not to be on the score-sheet.
Bernard Molekwa's charges were playing on the counter attacks and Rodney Ramagalela came close in the 44th minute after breaking with pace but was stopped in his tracks by Mosa Lebusa inside the box.
The second half started with rain pouring heavily on the pitch.
Ramagalela unleashed a powerful drive from just outside the box in the 58th minute but goalkeeper Brandon Peterson was equal to the task.
The match livened up in the 69th minute as both teams were going at each other with pace but lacked the killer-instinct.
Prince Nxumalo eventually broke the deadlock for the Urban Warriors in the 70th minute after a mistake by Chigova, 1-0.
Menzo brought on Rodrick Kabwe in the place of Bantu Mzwakali in the 82nd minute, a like-for-like midfield substitution.
Rise and Shine were piling pressure in the final five minutes, with the Urban Warriors desperately defending their slender lead.
However, Nxumalo made it 2-0 in the 90th minute converting Kabwe's brilliant cross with a header.
