Sundowns & Wits Looking To Rediscover Form
Absa Premiership Preview 1 October 2017
The last two Absa Premiership champions, Mamelodi Sundowns and Bidvest Wits are in action today, with both clubs currently in the bottom half of the table.
Sundowns travel to Rustenburg this afternoon to take on Roger De Sa’s struggling Platinum Stars, who have yet to win a game this season, while Wits will be in the Dr Molemela Stadium to take on Bloemfontein Celtic, and both teams will be desperate to get a win and to move their way up the standings, with the likes of Golden Arrows and Orlando Pirates being the early pace-setters this season.
Sundowns have won two of their three Absa Premiership matches to date and have games in hand to make up for lost time, due to CAF commitments, but the Brazilians will also be dealing with a post-Champions League elimination hangover, having suffered a 4-2 penalty shootout loss to Wyad Casablanca in the CAF Champions League and will be concerned by their relatively poor record against Dikwena over the years, having won just seven of their last 22 games against them and drawing 2-2 in their last game at Lucas Moripe Stadium last season.
In the other game today, the reigning champions have fell victim to the so-called “sophomore curse”, that has seen teams winning the title in years ending in seven struggling in the following season, and have won just one game all season, a 1-0 win over Orlando Pirates on matchday six. With that said, Celtic have also won just a single game this season as they’ve slipped down into 12th place, which will make Gavin Hunt confident about coming away with a favourable result. Furthermore, Wits hold a marginally better historical advantage, with nine wins from their last 22 league games against Celtic, who have won eight.
As things stand, both Sundowns and Wits will feel confident going into their games today, but they need to avoid complacency, as a slip up could have them finding themselves in hot water, as alarm bells are set to go off.
