Who Are Chiefs’ Maize Cup Opponents? The History Of Township Rovers
A detailed look at Kaizer Chiefs' Maize Cup opponents
Kaizer Chiefs take on Township Rollers in the Maize Cup today, but fans of the local game may not be familiar with the club from Botswanan. We take a look at the Gaborone-based club to get a better idea of what Amakhosi will be up against.
Popa-Popa, as the club is affectionately known, enjoys the largest support base of any sports team in our neighbouring country and were founded in 1965.
This is largely due to their 14 Botswana Premier League titles, with the latest coming in the recently closed season. They also boast 12 trophies from various cup competitions across the country and have appeared twice in the CAF Champions League, including a first-round loss against CNaPs Sport of Madagascar in the first round, as well as a second-round appearance in the CAF Confederation Cup back in 2006.
Last season, they won the league by five points, scoring 59 goals and conceding just 18 in a 30-match campaign.
The most notable player in the current squad for PSL fans will be YouTube sensation, Tshepo 'Skhwama' Matete, who was released by Baroka in January and joined the club as he looks to revive his career. In an uncompetitive match, it would be reasonable to see the fan-favourite put his incredible skills on display, which could bring plenty of fans into the James Motlatsi Stadium.
