Sangweni's Bucs Jersey Number Revealed?
Thamsanqa Sangweni Was Unveiled By Orlando Pirates Chairman
Following an announcement from Orlando Pirates that Thamsanqa Sangweni has been signed by the club, the team’s supporters and football fans have been quickly reminded of the midfielder’s older brother, Siyabonga Sangweni, during the former Bafana Bafana defender’s time at the Soweto giants.
The Buccaneers made the announcement on Monday that Thami has joined the club on a deal to see him with the side until 2020. The older Sangweni enjoyed success with Pirates, during his five-year stay with the club between 2011 and 2016.
Apart from achieving success by winning trophies with the Buccaneers and captaining the side at some stage, Sangweni was well respected at the club by his teammates and supporters alike.
Club chairman, Irvin Khoza, announced the retirement of ‘Ntsimbi’ from professional football in April last year. At only 34 years of age at the time, Sangweni was forced into retirement by a career-ending injury that had been troubling him.
With the Sangweni brothers known for their love of having number 21 at the back of their jerseys, football fans were quickly drawn into speculation on whether Thami will want to have the same number on his back at Bucs.
21 is the same number that Sangweni had at the back of his Chippa United jersey, as well as at Mamelodi Sundowns and AmaZulu respectively.
While sources close to Bucs have indicated that Sangweni would be keen to get jersey 21, it is currently unavailable as it is being used by Patrick Phungwayo.
However, when he first arrived at the club, Phungwayo was wearing jersey number 3 as the number 21 jersey belonged to 'Ntsimbi'. Phungwayo only changed numbers after Sangweni's retirement.
It remains to be seen what jersey number Thami will get at Bucs during his first season with the club.
