Thanda Expecting Konqobe Back Despite Him Signing For Chippa
Former SA U20 Star Could Be In Trouble For Contracts With Different
Thanda Royal Zulu is expecting Ayabulela Konqobe to report at the club as the team will be re-assembling next week, after the off-season break.
Despite agreeing to sell their recently acquired PSL status to AmaZulu, Thanda is still waiting on the league to hear if the sale of the club will be approved or not. As reported by the Siya crew, Konqobe has signed a contract with Chippa United.
The player’s father, Velile Konqobe, has confirmed in the latest edition of Soccer Laduma that his son has signed a contract with the Chilli Boys. However, Thanda say the player has a contract with them, after the option they had on his deal was exercised.
Thanda CEO, Sifiso ‘Jomo’ Biyela, says the former SA U20 captain is expected to report at the KZN club on Monday.
“We have exercised the option – whether people are not happy about the option or what – unfortunately, that’s the contract we signed with the player and his agent at the time, (Lizwe) Mthethwa. He is the one who was Aya’s agent by then. You can phone him and he will confirm that the copy stipulates that Aya has one-year plus option. We called the player and exercised the option. He is aware of it.
“According to us, we are expecting Aya – just like any other player – to report (for pre-season) on Monday. About other things, we don’t know,” said Biyela.
Contacted for comment, Mthethwa confirmed that Konqobe’s deal with Thanda was extended.
“Aya has a two-year contract with me. It’s the deal we agreed on before I took him to Thanda. ‘Jomo’ is telling the truth, Aya has a contract with Thanda. Because of the things that happened with the player in the past, ‘Jomo’ and I agreed that he should be given a one-year contract, when he joined the club. It was a one-year contract plus an option of another year. So, Aya is still a Thanda Royal Zulu player,” said Mthethwa.
According to Biyela, there has been no clearance certificate issued to Konqobe for his move to Chippa.
“Whether there is an agreement between AmaZulu and Thanda, it doesn’t mean that there’s a ‘free for all’ (for players). Regarding the issue of the players, players belong to the team. Whoever wants players has to contact the team.
“No one has contacted Thanda about the player (Konqobe). As for where the player belongs and all that, that should have been avoided.
“At the end of the day, we are the ones (Thanda) who were supposed to issue the player’s clearance. We can’t just issue the clearance for things we don’t know. The protocol in football is that, if you want a player that is contracted to a club, you contact that club and show interest. It’s that club that has to give you a right to engage the player. Once you engage the player and agree on terms, the club can come with its terms. That’s the protocol,” explained the Thanda official.
The Siya crew has been reliably informed that arrangements have been made for Konqobe to take a flight from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth on the weekend on his way to link up with Chippa.
It has been arranged for him to stay in Bluewater Bay. However, an official word from Thanda is that Konqobe belongs to the club.
“Whoever wants Aya should contact me and tell me tell me there is interest so I can give them the go ahead. To tell me now that Aya is joining Chippa or any other team – to me that is a rumour.
“One: His father didn’t tell me that he is joining Chippa. Two: His agent, Abbie (Rasimphi), didn’t tell me that there is interest from Chippa. Three: The player didn’t tell me that there is interest from Chippa.
“The last time I heard about interest it was interest from Free State Stars. Even with that, it was through the media,” concluded Biyela.
The Siya crew will keep you posted.
