Guimaraes Receive Bumper Zungu Offer Worth R87m
Vitoria de Guimaraes Have Received A Big Offer For Bongani Zungu
The Siya crew have been informed that Vitoria de Guimaraes received a bumper offer of around €6m (R87.5m) from an unnamed English club for Bongani Zungu.
Zungu is hot property at present having had a sterling second half of the season for Guimaraes, scoring in the Taca de Portugal final last month as his side went down 2-1 to Benfica.
A stellar second half to the 2016/17 campaign saw him attract interest from Portugal, Germany and England and it now appears unlikely that he will be returning to the club next season amid growing rumours.
It was recently reported that English Championship side, Sheffield Wednesday, were interested in the Bafana Bafana international, although strict work permit rules in the UK mean that it will be difficult, though not impossible, for him to make the move there.
While Guimaraes’ original asking price for the midfielder was around €3.5m (R50m), the fact that an English club has bid €6m could be a way of them trying to circumnavigate the work permit rules based on the transfer fee paid.
An example of this is Egyptian midfielder, Ramadan Sobhi, who signed for Stoke City for a similar fee last year. The 20-year-old was given special dispensation after failing to meet the criteria for an automatic permit.
Bafana’s average FIFA ranking over the past two years means that he also doesn’t qualify for an automatic Governing Body Endorsement, but can apply to the Exceptions Panel where he could be granted a GBE on special dispensation.
Should Guimaraes accept the bid, as expected, then the English club will have to prepare themselves for the fact that a permit may not be granted, although the transfer fee could go some way in helping his cause.
The Siya crew will continue to keep an eye on Zungu’s situation as he inches closer to a move away from his current club.
