Update On Zungu As Club Seeks New Deal
Bongani Zungu's Club Want The Bafana Star To Stay
Bongani Zungu could end up staying with Vitoria de Guimaraes for the time being, with the club working behind the scenes to try and keep him there.
The Bafana Bafana international came into his own in the second half of last season as he helped the club in their successful mission to reach the UEFA Europa League and even scored in the Taca de Portugal final as they lost to Benfica.
Zungu is now back in Portugal undergoing pre-season training with his club as they prepare for the 2017/18 campaign and there has been plenty of speculation regarding his future after attracting interest from all over Europe.
It has previously been reported by the Siya crew that clubs such as Benfica, Porto, Tottenham Hotspur and Sheffield Wednesday have shown an interest in trying to land the 24-year-old, but it appears his club are not keen on selling him at this point.
The former Mamelodi Sundowns man has one year left on his contract with Guimaraes at this stage, and the crew is led to believe that they are looking to hand him an improved package in an attempt to get him to stay.
Zungu also posted a picture on social media suggesting that he’s been offered the number 10 jersey at Guimaraes, which could also be another plan from the club to persuade him to stick around.
If Zungu was to leave his club, Benfica is reportedly the favourites to sign him, however, Wednesday are currently in Portugal on pre-season camp and might seek a discussion if they decide to pursue their interest.
At this point though, Guimaraes seem to be intent on putting their foot down as they seek to progress in the Europa League with Zungu’s help and they may choose to decline any sort of interest at this stage in order to keep him on board.
