Starting XI: Bafana v Cape Verde

2018 World Cup Qualifier Starting XI: Bafana Bafana v Cape Verde 05 September 2017

2018 World Cup Qualifier

Teams: Bafana Bafana v Cape Verde

Date: 05 September 2017

Venue: Moses Mabhida Stadium

The action is heating up as teams still aim to make the 2018 FIFA World Cup finals in Russia next year.

South Africa host Cape Verde at the Moses Mabhida Stadium and will be looking to get their campaign back on track after losing out 2 – 1 to their visitors in Praia last Friday.

The match is scheduled to get underway at 19h00.

The Islanders had never beaten Bafana Bafana prior to their triumph last week and were without a point after losing out to the other two group D candidates.

Lucio Antunez’ men will surely be buoyed by their comeback victory against a much fancied Bafana Bafana outfit and the coach will be looking for much more of the same from his troops in Durban.

Coach Stuart Baxter will want to forget about his team’s dismal showing and will be hoping for a much better performance if his team is to have any chance of qualifying for Russia 2018.

The fortunate part for both teams is that their counterparts in their group played to a goalless draw, leaving the group wide open as just two points separate Burkina Faso who lead the group with five points and Cape Verde who crop the group with three points.

It’s all to play for at Moses Mabhida stadium as Bafana Bafana and Cape Verde look to climb higher up the table.

Here's how they line up:

Bafana: Sandilands, Gould, Hlatshwayo, Hlanti, Mphahlele, Furman, Kekana, Zwane, Dolly, Grobler, Rantie.

Cape Verde: Dias, Almeida, Pereira, Rodrigues Dos Santos, Da Druz, Soares, Rocha, Rodrigues, Mendes, Tavares.

Our country has always found a way of trying to blame people for our failures. We have changed couches for the past 6 World Cup & Africa cup of Nation qualifiers but never have I heard that the likes of Danny Jordan and the whole SAFA committee had been changed after Bafana has failed to qualify for a big competition encounter, we all know that Baxter,Pitso,Mashaba, etc are great coaches but are never given the opportunity to change the current approach of couching these models. When Zimbabwe & Zambia plays Teams up in Africa the players hunger of winning is way different from what we see from our players representing the squad. SAFA's current board must fall not the couch

SAFA is a Joke, If you think Pitso was a bad coach for Bafana, Gordon was a bad coach for Bafana, Mashaba was a bad coach for Bafana or Baxter is a bad coach then you don’t understand football, SAFA should not have fired Mashaba at that crucial stage of the world cup qualifiers and bring on a new coach in the form of Baxter, they should have allowed him to finish what he started, SAFA is making coaching Bafana Bafana the most difficult job in the world, if I was Gavin Hunt I was not going to wish to be a Bafana Bafana coach under the current SAFA leadership, I feel sorry for poor Baxter, you should have seen his post-match interview with Marawa, when a new coach comes in to the team it doesn’t matter how good he is, he must first learn the players in order to come with best combinations and the players must learn his philosophy and it doesn’t need Sir Alex Ferguson to understand that. There was no time for both Baxter and Bafana to do that, you might go through the process while getting results like what Mashaba did when qualifying Bafana for 2015 AFCON and if that happens then you are lucky, in this case both Baxter and Bafana have the mixture of both, they were lucky to beat Nigeria and unlucky to lose to Cape Verde. Unfortunately, you cannot always depend in luck in football, you must work hard and understand how to run it, when to fire the coach and get the new one, which decision to make and when to make it, identify problem areas and come up with solutions. I think is high time that SAFA is run by former footballers, current leaders are letting the country down, Uther Zwane/Lucky Lekgwathi can do a better job than Danny Jordan. We need people who understand the challenges our country’s football is facing and who can come up with solutions than complaining about it, South Africans love football and they deserve better. What is happening between the PSL and SAFA, having domestic fixture during (CHAN & COSAFA) the tournaments that we must use to build a formidable Bafana and give our PSL players international exposure is a very big setback for SA football that have more domestic than oversea players, if the PSL is the best league with the highest standard in Africa, then let’s get best PSL players to compete for COSAFA & CHAN and beat our opponents with the average of 7 goals and build their confidence and see if it will not improve our chances of making it to big tournaments like AFCON and FIFA world cup. Doctor Khumalo, Mark Fish, Neil Tovey and Linda Buthelezi’s confidence was not build the day they beat Cameroon 3 nil or the day they beat Ghana 3 nil or the day they beat Tunisia 2 nil, it was built by winning Simba four nations. We need football leaders who can do something about it and come up with solutions, the problem has been there for too long and complaining about it is not helping us, we need solutions. If SAFA is serious about getting Bafana Bafana right, they will stop firing good coaches for stupid reasons, sort out the mess between them and the PSL (In availability of players for CHAN and COSAFA due to fixtures) and focus in development so that it doesn’t take us 30 years to replace retired goal poacher like Benni McCarthy and best defenders like Lucas Radebe. It is unfortunate that even today we are still struggling to get our football Identity, which formation best suit our players, what to expect from Bafana Bafana on the day of the game, I don’t think it should take 50 years, 10 years is enough, today we beat Mexico, tomorrow we lose to Zambia, today we beat Spain tomorrow we lose to Mauritania, today we beat Nigeria, tomorrow we lose to Cape Verde, today our players are performing with their tails high(with full of confidence), tomorrow we play like headless chickens, all because of lack of leadership. SAFA if you think you are doing a very good job the you must think again, you are doing a very good job in destroying our football.

Sir Baxter lost this game. His tactics were poor on the day. First of all on the first leg he could see that, the long balls over the shoulder of defenders and crosses were not effective against the oppornents but yet he opted in going about it again. I was expecting ball playing players to be involve last night. The likes of Jali, Mokrotjo with either Zungu or Kekana in that middle of the park. Have Serero, Tau and Dolly upfront with no target man. Allow those boys to move around as much as they can to engage with the short passing game. The team became more enegetic after Jali's introduction, Dolly became alive Manyama also, Rama was pumped up because Jali introduced the short passing game to unlock the Cape Verde's Defence. Khune has no competition in SA. We all need to acknowledge that. I know he is no Messaih however that boy has a special six sense that anticipate were the strikers are targeting the poles, hence he always produce superb saves when call upon

Why Jali was on the bench for both Cape Verde games, why call Erasmus from France and keep hem on the bench. We were down 2-0, but instead of Erasmus, bringing midfielders Why? Baxter and your technical team, you killing our patriotism and passion for Bafana Bafana

Why Andile Jali,Percy Tau instead of DEAN FURMAN AND GROBLER / KEKANA, no we are going nowhere,Mhlongo can do better than Williams and Sandilands please SAFA OR Mr T Nxesi do something because Former Minister Fikile Mbalula don't like that.
