Vital Sundowns Trio Ruled Out Of CAF Quarterfinal

By SL International - Sep 17, 2017 12:30 PM
Mamelodi Sundowns have been dealt a big blow ahead of today’s CAF Champions League quarterfinal, with three key players being ruled out of the encounter.

Masandawana face Moroccan giants, Wydad Casablanca, at Lucas Moripe Stadium at 15h00 as they look to make use of home advantage before next week’s second leg.

However, Pitso Mosimane will have to do that without the likes of star attacker, Khama Billiat, as well as super sub, Anthony Laffor, and new signing, George Lebese.

Mosimane’s side have lost just one of their eight CCL games so far this year, although have won just one of their four home games up to now – including a defeat to another Northan African side, Esperance de Tunis, in June.

The club’s official website confirmed that Billiat’s hip problem, Laffor’s ankle issue and Lebese’s groin will see all three players miss the game, with Mosimane being forced to look elsewhere with regards to the Brazilians’ attacking threat against the Kings of Titles.

Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Themba Zwane would like this to be the season he gets nominated for big awards. Zwane is without a doubt one of the most talented players in the country and he wants to now get to a level where he is recognised at the end of season PSL awards. Some of his teammates, such as Khama Billiat, Thabo Nthethe, Percy Tau, Denis Onyango and Hlompho Kekana, have either won or been nominated for big awards both locally and on the continent, so the 28-year-old Zwane is inspired by this. The Bafana Bafana midfielder was one of Sundowns’ best players last season, scoring nine goals in all competitions. He’s got one goal this season and is itching to get more. “I am hoping that we win the cups that are available at the moment. I want to score more goals and maybe get nominated for some PSL awards at the end of the season,” he tells INDIDANE. “I get motivated a lot when my teammates win because it shows that if you work hard there’s a reward that you will get at the end of the season. So it motivates me a lot to work hard. I want to continue where I left off last season, to keep improving, scoring and creating those chances. I also want to play as many games as a I can.” Zwane will be a key player when Sundowns take on Moroccan outfit Wydad Casablanca in the first leg of the CAF Champions League quarterfinals at Lucas Moripe Stadium this afternoon. Sundowns finished the group stages without a win at home, so they will be looking to improve on this in the knockout phase of the competition.
