African Champs 'Downs Clinch A Point In Tunisia

CAF Champions League Report: ES Tunis v Mamelodi Sundowns 21 June 2017

By Soccer Laduma - Jun 22, 2017 12:55 AM
CAF Champions League

Result: ES Tunis 0-0 Mamelodi Sundowns

Date: 21 June 2017

Venue: Stade Olympique de Rades

CAF Champions League champions, Mamelodi Sundowns managed to secure a point in Tunisia, as they played out a 0-0 draw with Esperance on Wednesday night.

The home side enjoyed most of the possession in the opening 15 minutes and looked threatening down the flanks, although they failed to create a clear-cut chance.

Sundowns eventually started seeing a bit of the ball after 20 minutes, but they failed to threaten in the final third.

The visitors should have taken the lead in the 33rd minute when the Esperance defence gifted the ball to Themba Zwane, who unselfishly teed up Percy Tau in the box but the midfielder fired straight at Ben Cherifia.

Six minutes later, Denis Onyango was called into action as the Sundowns shot-stopper produced a superb save to keep Ben Youssef's header.

Esperance ended the first half the stronger of the two sides, but the score remained goalless as the sides entered the break.

The second half started in the same fashion as the first with Esperance dominating the possession statistics, while Sundowns looked to attack on the counter.

The hosts went close to breaking the deadlock after 66 minutes, but Ben Youssef's volley from distance sailed just wide of Onyango's goal.

Chances were hard to come by for the clubs in the second half, which prompted Pitso Mosimane to introduce Thapelo Morena for Anthony Laffor after 75 minutes.

Esperance upped the tempo in the closing stages as they pushed for a winning and they went close to scoring in the 88th minute, but Onyango produced a good save to deny the hosts a goal.

Nevertheless, Sundowns managed to hold out till the final whistle to claim a point on the road.

Here's how they lined up:

Sundowns: Sundowns: Onyango, Ngcongca, Madisha, Soumahoro, Langerman, Kekana, Vilakazi, T.Zwane (Mohomi 90'), Tau, Laffor (Morena 75'), Zakri.

@mabenamusa4, yeah zanaco is dangerous buddy, however, having said that, we can handle them, we can unlock their defense. I think we tend to struggle to find a master key for the Northern hemisphere teams, not forgetting what we did to Zamalek last winter.

@Vhivha Bangally can only score when there is a sleeping Mweene in goals. This guy is just being unfairly crucified.

KBYs please put Bangaly as a striker and bench Tau. My Bangaly would have scored another own goal if Onyango was not wide awake, Bangaly does not miss the back of the net

Didn't watch the game though, however I am well satisfied with the point. I believe we will make it to the Next round. Just hope al ahli will stick to position number two to minimize the chances of us playing against them
