Stuart Baxter Thanks Clubs For Releasing Players For COSAFA
Bafana Bafana head coach, Stuart Baxter, has thanked clubs for releasing their players for national team duty despite the COSAFA Cup not falling under the FIFA calendar.
The South African Football Association confirmed on Sunday that Mandla Masango and Lebogang Phiri has been withdrawn from the Bafana squad due to the duo having to report to their respective clubs for pre-season training.
The COSAFA tournament began on Sunday, June 25, however, Bafana will only get their defending campaign underway on Sunday, July 02.
Speaking to SAFA’s official website, Baxter said, “It is a fact that this tournament does not fall under the FIFA Calendar date, so it was always going to be a struggle to put together a team, but we have (to) say a big thank you to all the clubs who were able to assist us in putting together this group of players. The cooperation we got from the clubs was very positive and inspiring and we really appreciate that.”
Baxter returned to his permanent role as the head coach of the national team, following his last match at the helm of SuperSport United, where he guided his side to be crowned champions of the 2017 Nedbank Cup competition.
“It’s a good thing that I am now able to focus all my attention on the national team and don’t have to keep on swapping hats and uniforms to service this or the other project. Now I am able to pour all my energies on this one job and make the best of it,” he added.
