Bafana's COSAFA Captain Confirmed
Lehlogonolo Masalesa Has Been Named As Bafana's COSAFA Cup Captain
Stuart Baxter has named former Orlando Pirates midfielder, Lehlogonolo Masalesa, as his Bafana Bafana captain for the upcoming COSAFA Cup tournament.
South Africa find out their opponents for the quarterfinals of the competition this evening as Group A comes to a close, with Tanzania the most likely opponents for Baxter’s side on July 2nd.
The Englishman recently named Bidvest Wits’ Thulani Hlatshwayo as his permanent captain, however with an experimental team in Rustenburg for this tournament he had to decide on someone to lead his troops.
Masalesa, 25, has been playing for Greek side, AE Larissa, so far this year, however it was recently confirmed to the Siya crew that he will be moving on. His qualities did show in Europe though as he became a regular for his team in their successful battle to avoid relegation.
When asked why he chose ‘Vieira’ for the armband, Baxter told SAFA.net, “He has presence, character and authority. He also has the experience of playing abroad and here at home, which means players look up to him. They also see his quality on the field and he could serve as an inspiration.”
Meanwhile, the player himself was caught off-guard by his coach’s decision, saying, “I won’t lie, I am shocked because we have a few leaders in the team and I did not expect this. But it’s a big honour and I will take in my stride.
“We have a good bunch of players and it should be easy to lead them because there is a lot of respect among everyone, they don’t look at where I play but what I can do on the field. I like how they get along as a group and it makes it easier for the older ones.”
