Bafamatics: How Bafana Can Still Get To Russia 2018

Bafana Aren't Out Of The World Cup Just Yet

By Soccer Laduma - Sep 06, 2017 03:49 PM

Two defeats to Cape Verde have left Stuart Baxter’s Bafana Bafana in a very precarious position with regards to Russia 2018, but they’re not out of it just yet.

Bafana went into these two games against Cape Verde with four points from two games, knowing that at least one win would give them a good chance of getting themselves in a solid position for a spot at the World Cup next year.

However, 2-1 defeats both home and away has seen South Africa fall to the bottom of Group D with two games to go as their hopes of making it to the global showpiece hanging by a thread.

But all is not lost… Not yet anyway. Thanks to Burkina Faso and Senegal drawing twice, if Bafana can secure victories in their final two matches – and Cape Verde don’t win both of theirs – then it could be Baxter’s side that end up taking top spot and securing a berth at Russia 2018.

As things stand the group looks like this:

Burkina Faso

+2

6 pts

Cape Verde

-2

6 pts

Cape Verde

+1

5 pts

Cape Verde

+1

4 pts

Two victories against Burkina Faso (October) and Senegal (November) would see Bafana move up to 10 points and into positive goal difference, while their opponents could only reach nine and eight points respectively.

If CV win one and draw one – as well as Bafana winning both – then it will be decided on goal difference which, at this stage, is in South Africa’s favour.

It’s not the first time that South African football fans will be keeping an eye on other results as they look to book their spot in a tournament, but after two terrible results this month they will be happy that there’s a sliver of hope at all.

you are making a mistake Mr editor, CAF does not use goal difference, they consider head to head 1st before goal difference. so if Bafana and cape verde are sitting at 10 pts each then cape verde will go through

You get to world cup by winning games not hoping for results elsewhere! We must resign from playing as a nation 'Bafana-Bafana' if possible, if it was a team ! shame i wonder if someone was gonna buy it, every coach tried, with different players, tactics and strategies, ho a nahena! worse there is no Drawing board to go back to! for me personally i tink the problem is that Most PSL teams their key Players are Foreign footballers!

Last nite SA played second fiddle to CV because CV dominated the midfield battle. At 32 years, Hlompo Kekana, has neither the lungs or the legs to play as a box-to-box number 8. Andile Jali(27) has proven himself to be the best number 8 in the country. He may not have a cool head, but he surely has the heart, the lungs and the legs for that position. Dean Furman is an honest hardworking player. He honestly plays with his heart on his sleeve. However, he has technical and tactical limitations for a modern day number 6 when compared to a Kamohelo Mokotjo or a Rivaldo Coetzee. The number 10 position remains up for grabs, between Serero, Erasmus, Manyama and Tau. It boggles the mind, that all four were selected. Themba Zwane and Keagan Dolly are the countries best wide attacking options, on the right and left flank respectively. Wingbacks, Mphahlele and Langerman need to be replaced by Thabo Morena and Deolin Mekoa. Mphahlele for all his hard running on the right flank is very wastefull in the final third. Langerman does not have the legs or the guile on the left flank. Dino Ndhlovu deserves a chance at number 9, with Lebo Mothiba as his understudy. Support strikers, Rantie and Veldwijk complete the forward selection. Rantie's terrestrial ability of raw pace and power is a proven asset to the team. Lars Veldwijk's aerial ability could be better exploited. Hlatshwayo, Mathoho and Hlanti, complete a defensive trio, with Khune in goal. Zungu needs to play off the bench, as a 8 or 10.

This is still an open group that will be decided in the last round of matches, where composure will be deciding factor to Russia. SA will lead the group with 7 points, followed by CV on 7 points, BF on 6 points and Senegal on 6 points.

This can happen only when we are talking. But it is difficult really. We all know what lays ahead.I am not seeing us getting even one point from Senegal and Burkina Faso.
