It was an evenly contested affair in the opening 10 minutes with both teams sizing each other up on the artificial turf.
Stuart Baxter's charges broke the deadlock in the 14th minute as Tokelo Rantie accelerated past two defenders before calmly slotting past Dias.
Cape Verde continued to enjoy the lion's share of the ball even after falling behind but they failed test Ronwen Williams in the opening 30 minutes.
However, the home side leveled matters in the 31st minute when Nuno Rocha found the back of the net with a deflected effort.
The hosts were then awarded a penalty seven minutes later when Dean Furman was adjudged to have committed a foul on Ryan Mendes. Rocha stepped up and made no mistake from the spot, 2-1.
Bafana pushed for an equaliser in the closing stages of the half, but the score remained 2-1 at the halftime break.

The hosts nearly extended their lead in the 73rd minute, but Williams proved his worth by producing a good save at the near post.
