If The Big Teams Aren’t Careful…

On Bafana Bafana’s loss to Tanzania in the COSAFA Cup
Our coach, Stuart Baxter, said it from the beginning that he was going to use the COSAFA Cup to give the younger players exposure. He said he was going use it as a test for the young players and to give them a chance to have a feel of what it is like to represent the nation. We already know of the likes of Percy Tau and others, so he opted for the other youngsters, which is good for our football. We cannot blame our coach or the players… they are on the right track. By the time we get to the World Cup qualifiers, the coach would have had a clear indication of who to select to add to his tried-and-tested brigade, based on how these young boys did in this competition. Let us just support Baxter, give him a chance and time to get his team together.
On the upcoming PSL awards
If you look at how the 2016/17 season panned out, then you’ll know that it’s not going to be easy to choose the standout player. It was a very competitive season. Yes, you have Thulani Hlatshwayo, Lebogang Manyama, Aubrey Ngoma and Hlompho Kekana. There were so many good players. These players that I mentioned, they’ve achieved this past season. Look at Bidvest Wits as a team. They did wonders. They won the league fairly and congratulations to them. You also have Cape Town City, who were in their maiden season in the PSL. They came from Mpumalanga to Cape Town and it didn’t take them long to gel. They finished the season in a respected third position on the PSL log table. To answer the question, I would select Manyama as the Footballer of the Season and maybe Ngoma as the Player of the Season. One thing that this season made me realise is that if the so-called big teams are not careful, they’ll end up being forgotten.
On Supporters Club
This is history in the making. You don’t hear about such initiatives often. But I think we must pull up our socks as well. We must stand up. We must meet the supporters very often so that we can get to hear about their grievances so as to solve them immediately. We must be able to act quickly and accordingly.
