2018 World Cup Qualifier
Report: Italy 1-0 Israel
Date: 05 September 2017
Venue: MAPEI Stadium
Ciro Immobile scored the only goal of the game to lead Italy to a 1-0 win over Israel in a 2018 World Cup qualifier on Tuesday evening.
In the first ten minutes of the encounter, the two sides cancelled each other out, committing too many fouls that affected the flow of the match.
Giampiero Ventura's charges had their first real opportunity in the 16th minute with Daniele De Rossi hitting a right-footed shot from just outside the box but went slightly over the bar.
The Azzurri's main attacking channel was through crosses and corner-kicks, with De Rossi threatening to open the scoring in the air.
Elisha Levy's charges, meanwhile, were playing deep in their own half, allowing the hosts space to penetrate on the wings.
In the 32nd minute Lorenzo Insigne whipped in a decent cross into the 18-yard box that found Andrea Belotti, but the striker's header missed narrowly wide of the goals.
Chances were few and far between in the last ten minutes of the half but Belotti got another opportunity to open the scoring in the stroke of half-time but his shot inside the box rattled the crossbar.
The match went into the interval logged at 0-0.
Ciro Immobile eventually broke the deadlock for Italy in the 53rd minute, following a great cross from Antonio Candreva, 1-0.
Candreva was threatening yet again in the 69th minute with an outswinging cross that found Belotti, but the striker was unlucky to see his header miss inches over the bar.
Belotti rued another missed chance in the 74th minute as he could not angle his header from inside the small box on target, missing by a few inches wide.
The Blue and Whites were up against it in the closing stage as they started to send men forward in numbers.
Nevertheless, the Azzurri managed to see out the closing stages to claim the three points.
