De Bruyne & Sterling Seal Victory For Man City

UCL Match Report: Manchester City v Shakhtar Donetsk 26 September 2017

By SL International - Sep 26, 2017 10:43 PM

UEFA Champions League

Result: Manchester City 2-0 Shakhtar Donetsk

Date: 26 September 2017

Venue: Etihad

Kevin De Bruyne and Raheem Sterling scored for Manchester City who secured a 2-0 victory at home to Shakhtar Donetsk.

The match came alive in the seventh minute when Kevin De Bruyne beautifully found Sergio Aguero in the opposition box with the Manchester City striker finishing with a tame effort towards the Shakhtar Donetsk goal.

The Ukranian giants were keeping possession well and they put together a string of passes that set midfielder Fred through on goal only to be stopped by a timeous tackle by Fernandinho before he could get his shot away.

Kevin De Bruyne squandered a glorious chance to put Manchester City ahead after Gabriel Jesus intercepted the ball in the middle of the park and set City on a counter. The Brazilian put De Bruyne through on goal and the City midfielder missed the target completely.

It was end to end stuff as Shakhtar attacked well and saw Marlos’ dangerously curling effort deflected away by Ederson Moraes in the City goal.

After a series of attacks from both sides neither could find that telling blow and the half ended in an entertaining 0-0.

Manchester City got off to a great start in the second half after a good interception in the midfield set David Silva free. The midfielder laid the ball for Kevin De Bruyne on the edge of the box, the Belgian international curled the ball superbly into the top corner to give his team a 1-0 lead.

Shakhtar were doing well to keep possession but lacked the final product in the opposition final thrird and hardly threatened Ederson Moraes in the City goal.

Raheem Sterling was set up clear on goal by a sweeping cross from De Bruyne but the winger failed to find the target from point blank range.

Leroy Sane took on the defense and was fouled in the box for a City penalty. Aguero was presented with an opportunity to double his side’s lead from the penalty spot but was denied by a good save from keeper Andriy Pyatov.

Sterling eventually redeemed himself shortly before the end of the game after a slick counter attack saw the pacey winger find the roof of the net to seal a handy 2-0 victory.

@mjoster I tend to disagree with you on this one...City has abundance of talent currently even without De Bryune and Aguero city still have full house of talent/players who will fill the gap.E.g...Kompany has been absent but we've consided Zero goals...that should tell you something about the empire that Pep Guardiola has built in just almost 0ne and a half season at Etihad. Most haters are still in denial to see that Man City will be successful under the guidance of of the Great...football Genius Pep Guardiola..!..Amen.

Sterling's run of scoring will do him the world of good. It's clear he's talented, but he's becoming more and more influential. Nice to see from an England perspective.

We've seen this for the past 2 seasons with City, De Bruyne and Aguero crop up with plenty of goals and they have the season won in September. Then the same old injuries kick in and form suffers. Pep already talking about going for the cheque book again due to Mendy's injury - his target, Rose who will have missed a whole year with injury by the time he is back. If De Bruyne and Aguero suffer their usual injuries (and they are not getting any younger) I foresee the same story again for City this season despite another decent start.

It was refreshing to see a team going toe to toe with Citizens...but My team looks is very very solid and stable this season and we are so hard to crack.Ohhhh my God...Bravo's days are gone,We've got Ederson Moraes now.The boy is a top top goalkeeper.John Stones is so impressive at the back so far...as for Fabian Delph hay I'm Speechless yho.
