Kevin De Bruyne and Raheem Sterling scored for Manchester City who secured a 2-0 victory at home to Shakhtar Donetsk.
The match came alive in the seventh minute when Kevin De Bruyne beautifully found Sergio Aguero in the opposition box with the Manchester City striker finishing with a tame effort towards the Shakhtar Donetsk goal.
The Ukranian giants were keeping possession well and they put together a string of passes that set midfielder Fred through on goal only to be stopped by a timeous tackle by Fernandinho before he could get his shot away.
Kevin De Bruyne squandered a glorious chance to put Manchester City ahead after Gabriel Jesus intercepted the ball in the middle of the park and set City on a counter. The Brazilian put De Bruyne through on goal and the City midfielder missed the target completely.
It was end to end stuff as Shakhtar attacked well and saw Marlos’ dangerously curling effort deflected away by Ederson Moraes in the City goal.
After a series of attacks from both sides neither could find that telling blow and the half ended in an entertaining 0-0.
Manchester City got off to a great start in the second half after a good interception in the midfield set David Silva free. The midfielder laid the ball for Kevin De Bruyne on the edge of the box, the Belgian international curled the ball superbly into the top corner to give his team a 1-0 lead.
Shakhtar were doing well to keep possession but lacked the final product in the opposition final thrird and hardly threatened Ederson Moraes in the City goal.
Raheem Sterling was set up clear on goal by a sweeping cross from De Bruyne but the winger failed to find the target from point blank range.
Leroy Sane took on the defense and was fouled in the box for a City penalty. Aguero was presented with an opportunity to double his side’s lead from the penalty spot but was denied by a good save from keeper Andriy Pyatov.
Sterling eventually redeemed himself shortly before the end of the game after a slick counter attack saw the pacey winger find the roof of the net to seal a handy 2-0 victory.
