'Messi Under New Deal Already'
'Lionel Messi Under New Deal Already'
There has been confusion surrounding Lionel Messi’s future at FC Barcelona, but it has now been said that the Argentine is already playing under a new contract.
With the forward’s deal expiring at the end of the season, there have been concerns among Barca fans that their record goal-scorer could consider leaving the club on a free deal.
However, president Josep Maria Bartomeu has claimed the 30-year-old is already playing under his new contract at the Catalans, though no official announcement has been made.
"We will take the photo with Messi's signature, hopefully before the end of the year," he told Fora de Joc.
"The contract has been signed by his father, who has the power of his image rights.
"This contract is signed until 2022 and he is already playing under it."
Three months ago the club said Messi had extended his stay with the Blaugrana, and the president later admitted the Argentine’s signature was the only thing missing from the contract.
It appears that only Messi’s father has signed part of the new deal, which the Catalans feel is a good enough indication of where the player’s future lies.
Bartomeu has received heavy criticism for his handling of the situation, along with other cases, which could lead to a vote of no confidence.
