‘Football Flava’ Represents South Africa At Neymar Jr's Five World Final
South African five-a-side team Football Flava will represent Mzansi at the world final of the #NeymarJrsFive tournament in Brazil, which is sponsored by Red Bull and allows the winning team to play against Neymar himself.
Football Flava was formed in 2003 by Zwide Mhlongo, who is still the manager of the group, and is also in Brazil with the team.
The team from Johannesburg won the SA finals of #NeymarJrsFive and have now travelled to Praia Grande, Neymar's hometown, to fly the South African flag.
Neymar Jr's Five is a five-a-side tournament with a twist – one team member has to leave the pitch with every opposition goal. The target is to eliminate the complete opposing team by scoring five goals or lead the scoreline after 10 minutes.
At the world finals, Football Flava will face teams from Mexico, Bulgaria, Oman, the United States and Turkey. The Mzansi boys will particularly look forward to the clash with Mexico, having played a Mexican side at the KIA Champ in the Arena World Finals in Russia last month.
The tournament was hosted along with the FIFA Confederations Cup, but unfortunately Football Flava lost to the Mexican representatives in the quarter-final on penalties.
Captain Brendon Morris and his side will hope to avenge their defeat in Russia when Football Flava and Mexico get Group E underway on 7 July.
The finals of Neymar Jr's Five will run from Friday, 7 July, to Saturday, 8 July, with more than 50 teams participating in this year's edition.
Football Flava actually have another advantage, having already represented South Africa at the 2016 edition of the tournament. However, on that occasion, they were knocked out in the group stages, so they will be hoping to improve on their 2016 performance, dreaming of playing against Neymar himself.
The FC Barcelona superstar will be present at the final, and the winner of the 2017 edition of #NeymarJrsFive, sponsored by Red Bull, will play a team made up of Neymar and friends.
Red Bull South Africa has sent Soccer Laduma's international editor David Kappel to Brazil to cover the trip and Football Flava's performances. Follow him on Twitter or Instagram under @kappilinho or search for the hashtag #KappilinhoInBrazil.
