Ronaldo Closing In On Messi World Record?
Cristiano Ronaldo Closing In On Lionel World Record?
Real Madrid and Portugal superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has been in superb form in 2017, and is now closing in on a world record he jointly holds with Lionel Messi.
The Portuguese netted three goals for Portugal over the current international break, taking his tally for the national team to 10 this year and 78 overall – one more than Brazil legend Pele scored for the Selecao.
Ronaldo started the year with a brace against Hungary before adding a goal against Sweden and another brace against Latvia. At the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup, Ronaldo scored two goals in four games as his side finished third. In addition, he netted a hat-trick against Faroe Islands on Thursday.
Furthermore, the Portuguese also scored 10 goals in the latter stages of the UEFA Champions League, almost singlehandedly eliminating Bayern Munich (five goals) and Atletico Madrid (three goals) in the quarter- and semi-finals, respectively, before scoring twice against Juventus in the final.
Overall, Ronaldo has now already scored 20 international goals in 2017, closing in on his own world record of 25, which he set in 2013. He shares the record with longstanding rival Messi, according to the International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS).
The Argentine also netted 25 international goals during his world record year in 2012, when he ended up scoring an impressive 91 times in all competitions for club and country.
Following his latest exploits, Ronaldo still has five games with Portugal plus six Champions League group stage matches and a potential two appearances at the FIFA Club World Cup to add six more strikes to his international tally for the year and become the sole world record holder.
The IFHHS usually crowns the World's Top Goalscorer, based on goals for the national team and at international club competitions, at the end of each calendar and Ronaldo is on track to lift the award a fourth time.
