It was another magical night for the Portuguese, who is currently serving a five-game domestic suspension after pushing the referee in the Spanish Super Cup first leg.
The Portuguese was dearly missed in his sides’ latest two La Liga draws, but immediately returned to the score-sheet in Real’s Champions League opener against APOEL.
He scored Los Blancos’ first two goals before Sergio Ramos rounded off the 3-0 win with a bicycle kick.
With his first strike, Ronaldo continued a run of scoring in the opening fixture of the competition in each of the last six seasons, as DailyMail pointed out.
His second goal came from the penalty spot, which means the 32-year-old has now scored 12 spot kick goals in the competition – more than any other player in history.
In so doing, he broke the record he previously shared with Messi. The Argentine has scored 11 penalties in the Champions League so far.
In addition, Ronaldo became the most-capped outfield player in the competition, making his 136th appearance – one more than Los Blancos legend Raul.
Only former Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas, who now plays for Porto has featured in more games than the 2017 UEFA European Player of the Year. The Spaniard was also in action last night, making his 164th UCL appearance in a 3-1 defeat to Besiktas.
