5 Superstars Who Could Still Miss 2018 FIFA World Cup

The likes of Gareth Bale and Riyad Mahrez are already confirmed to be missing the FIFA World Cup next year, but here are five superstar players who could still join them ahead of final round of qualifiers.

Argentina play Ecuador in their final qualifying match on Wednesday morning, where they will need all three points to give themselves a chance of going to Russia next year.

If Jorge Sampaoli’s side fail to qualify for the tournament, the likes of FC Barcelona’s Lionel Messi and Juventus’s Paulo Dybala will miss football’s biggest competition, which will be seen as a certain failure on their part.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal also find themselves in a tricky situation ahead of their match against Switzerland on Tuesday night. If Portugal fail to beat their opposition, they will be forced to go into a play-off game in order to qualify for the World Cup.

Fans would undoubtedly be disappointed if the Real Madrid superstar was to miss the tournament in Russia next year, as at 32-year-old, it could very well be the last time Ronaldo gets the chance to play in a World Cup for his nation.

Bayern Munich star Arjen Robben is also in danger of missing the World Cup, and in his case qualification seems unlikely, as Netherlands need to beat Sweden 7-0 in order to qualify for a play-off spot.

Update: 17 Teams Have Qualified For 2018 World Cup

There is also a chance superstar Alexis Sanchez missed the tournament next year, despite Chile sitting third in the South America qualifying standings. If Chile lose to Brazil on Wednesday morning and other results do not go their way, they could find themselves in a play-off showdown.
