Achraf Hakimi was included in Real's starting XI for their 2-0 win over Espanyol after first-choice right back Dani Carvajal missed out due to a viral infection.
"He was outstanding," Zidane said, as quoted by AS.
"Achraf has shown that he can play and I am not scared to throw him in going forward.
"He is the second-choice right back and so if Carvajal is not available, he can play.
"I am very happy with him, it is his first game here in the Bernabeu and he has done very well. Up, down, defending, serious, easy.
"I am happy with his debut because, for him and his life, it is an important day. To mark his debut with a good game."
Born in Madrid to Moroccan parents, Hakimi came through Madrid's youth academy. He represented the African nation at U17, U20 and U23 level, and made his senior national team debut on 11 November 2016.
"I'm delighted to have made my debut for the best club in the world, it's a day I'll never forget," he told Real's official website.
"My teammates help me out and give me advice every day and everything is easier when they're alongside you. I felt comfortable and I'll keep growing as a player, one step at a time.
"Sadly, Carvajal had a problem and Zidane called to say I should stay relaxed but that I was going to play, and to just do things like I have been in training."
Hakimi became only the seventh African to feature for Los Blancos when he made his debut for the club on Sunday.
