To prevent teams from overspending on wages for coaching staff and players, La Liga introduced these caps based on the club's total incomes.

According to information recently released by the Spanish top flight and cited by Football Espana, the Blaugrana head up the list with a €507.2 million (R8.06 billion) wage budget for the season, which is €7.6 million (R120.8 billion) more than their arch-rivals Los Blancos' budget.

Reigning La Liga champions Real's wage cap is said to be set at €499.6 million (R7.94 billion), which is almost double what their city rivals Atletico Madrid are allowed to spend.

Diego Simeone's Rojiblancos have the third largest budget in the Spanish league this season, which is capped at €237.7 million (R3.78 billion), while Sevilla's €159.6 million (R2.53 billion) and Valencia's €113.2 million (R1.8 billion) allocations complete the top five.

From sixth place down, the wage budgets are all below €100 million (R1.59 billion) – in sixth is Villarreal with a wage cap of €87.9 million (R1.39 billion), while in seventh is Ernesto Valverde's former club Athletic Bilbao with their budget of €68.5 million (R1.08 billion).
