Date: 27 August 2017
Venue: Santiago Bernabeu
Marco Asensio came to the rescue for Real Madrid, as the La Liga champions played out a 2-2 draw with Valencia at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The champions were without the services of Cristiano Ronaldo and Sergio Ramos, who were both serving suspensions.
Los Blancos eventually broke the deadlock in the 10th minute as Marco Asensio fired into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.
However, Valencia hit back in the 18th minute as Toni Lato surged down the left before lifting a fine cross into the box, where Carlos Soler was on hand to slot home.
Real went in search of another goal, and should have gone ahead after 32nd minute but Marcelo blazed over the crossbar from close range.
The home side were proving wasteful as the half drew to a close as Karim Benzema failed to score from six-yards, before placing a header wide two minutes later.
The score remained 1-1 at the halftime break.
Real continued from where they left off in the first half, as Benzema squandered another good chance after failing to connect with Marcelo's cross in the six-yard box in the 53rd minute.
Valencia did not sit back and they could have taken the lead after 71 minutes but Simone Zaza headed over the crossbar from close range.
The home fans were then stunned into silence in the 77th minute when Geoffrey Kondogbia latched onto a pass from Rodrigo and slotted into the bottom corner.
However, Real were level in the 83rd minute when Asensio bagged his second goal with a fine free-kick from the edge of the box.
Los Blancos should have taken the lead four minutes later when the ball fell for Benzema in the box, but the Frenchman placed his effort wide with only Neto to beat.
Neto ensured Valencia left with a point as he produced a superb save in stoppage time to push Benzema's header onto the upright as the match ended 2-2.
