FC Barcelona To Play In Premier League If Axed From La Liga?

By David Kappel - Sep 29, 2017 01:01 PM @kappilinho

FC Barcelona could reportedly be kicked out of La Liga, and as a consequence may try to register to play in the Premier League. Sounds crazy, but it could really happen, according to the latest reports.

The Spanish giants are in favour of the vote for Catalan independence on Sunday, but there remains a lot of uncertainty as to what would happen to Barca, Espanyol and Girona if Catalonia gains independence from Spain.

"In the case of independence, Catalan teams in La Liga – Barcelona, Espanyol and Girona – will have to decide where they want to play: in the Spanish league or a neighbouring country: Italy, France or the Premier League," Catalonia's minister of sport, Gerard Figueras, said, as quoted by the Daily Mirror.

"Now, in Spain, there are teams from other countries who play in national leagues: clubs from Andorra in football and basketball. Monaco play in France, in England Welsh clubs. I don't think that UEFA has anything against seeing another club play in a different league from their country."

La Liga president Javier Tebas has insisted that the Catalan clubs would not be allowed to play in La Liga if the region wins their independency from Spain.

"In sport, it isn't a la carte and things must be clearly stated. It isn't easy to have an agreement and study Spanish legislation but if they (Catalan clubs) do get that, then they will not be able to play in Spain's La Liga, but I hope it doesn't come to that," Tebas said.

Despite pressure from the national authorities and La Liga officials, a lot of Catalan sportsmen, including Pep Guardiola, are in favour of the vote for independence.

"We have no other option but to vote. We call on the international community to support us and on democrats the world over to help us to defend the rights that are threatened in Catalunya, such as the right of freedom of expression and the right to vote," the Manchester City boss said at a rally back in June.

Barca should continue playing there if UEFA has no rules against teams playing outside own countries, Spain must swallow their pride and allow Catalonia teams or else it disallowing Barca could have some adverse financial implications on La liga. If they are allowed into EPL,it will be by far the best league in the world and over some years LA liga could find themselves outside the top five, the Portuguese ligue might gladly relegate them!
