Romelu Lukaku Scores As 10-Man Manchester United See Off Real Salt Lake
Manchester United new boy Romelu Lukaku scored his first goal for the club on Tuesday morning as the Red Devils beat Real Salt Lake 2-1 at the Rio Tinto Stadium.
With the match being played at altitude, it was the hosts who caused all the trouble in the early stages of the match, with Joao Plata and Luis Silva, in particular, giving the English side some headaches.
In the 23rd minute, it was Silva who managed to give his side a surprise lead, with Phil Jones struggling to cope with the player's pace as he netted the ball calmly past young goalkeeper Joel Pereira.
The goal sparked the 2016/17 UEFA Europa League champions into action, and it took just five minutes for them to reply. Lukaku and Englishman Jesse Lingard linked up for some nice one-two play before teeing the ball up for Henrikh Mkhitaryan to score the equaliser.
The Manchester side's second came in the 39th minute, when Mkhitaryan became the provider for Lukaku, who rounded two defenders and the goalkeeper before netting the strike.
Jose Mourinho fielded a completely different XI in the second half, with Sergio Romero, Matteo Darmian, Antonio Valencia, Chris Smalling, Eric Bailly, Andreas Pereira, Ander Herrera, Marouane Fellaini, Juan Mata, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford all being introduced.
The wholesale change seem to have disrupted the game a bit, and things got tougher for the visitors after Antonio Valencia was sent off with 22 minutes remaining in the match, following a late tackle from behind on Sebastian Saucedo.
Despite their numerical disadvantage, United managed to seal the result and make it two wins out of two while on pre-season duty.
