If we look at the South American group, two big teams who may not qualify for the showpiece are Argentina and Chile. Both nations are currently outside the four automatic qualifying places, and this could mean we could miss out on seeing Alexis Sanchez and Messi at the tournament.

Most of Europe's elite footballing nations are in the driving seat of their groups, but the Netherlands could fail to make yet another major competition. The Dutch, who are in a tough group alongside France and Sweden, are currently third in Group A, which means we could miss out on seeing the likes Arjen Robben in Russia next year.

Africa is where we could see the most household names missing out on the trip to Russia, the most notable arguably being current CAF African Player of the Year Riyad Mahrez. Algeria, who are currently in last place, were drawn in a tough group with Nigeria, Zambia and Cameroon.

Other players who could miss out on Russia 2018 , based on their teams' current placings in their qualification groups, include Arda Turan (Turkey), Henrikh Mkhitaryan (Armenia), Antonio Valencia (Ecuador), Vincent Aboubakar (Cameroon), Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (Gabon) and Asamoah Gyan (Ghana).

Can you name other players who could suffer the same fate? Have your say in the comments section below.

I fail to understand how on earth messi fails to shine at both club and country whereby he is surrounded by stars: dimaria, aguero, dybala, etc etc and playing against small teams like peru, venezuela , bolivia while ronaldo is shining in europe, that shoulf say a lot.
