Reports: The Reason Why Lionel Messi Want To Join Pep Guardiola At Manchester City
FC Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi wanted to join Pep Guardiola at Manchester City last season, according to claims in a new documentary.
According to a TV3 documentary called Jocs fiscals, Messi's father contacted Citizens chief executive Ferran Soriano to tell him his son was looking to leave the Catalan giants because he felt "trapped" at the Camp Nou.
The phone call between Jorge Messi and Soriano apparently took place on 6 July 2016, four days before the player and Guardiola had a meeting with each other.
At the time, the Spanish coach was reportedly back in his home country on holiday, and then made a special trip to see his former star when he heard the news.
It has been said that Messi's distress was mainly due to him being worried about the 21-month suspended prison sentence he received for tax fraud, which led to him looking at possible ways of getting out of Spain.
The player's father then apparently contacted Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu to discuss the possibility of the Blaugrana letting his son move to the Premier League, a call that did not go down well with the club's boss.
The documentary claimed that any potential move to Guardiola's City fell apart quickly once Bartomeu was able to sit down with Messi and convince him that the club would not let anything happen to him.
