Liverpool legend Steve Nicol, who now works as a pundit for ESPN, has suggested United should go all out for Alvaro Morata, Monaco's Fabinho and Jordi Alba, even if the latter is seems an unrealistic target.
"Absolutely, it's a no-brainer," Nicol said about the potential signing of Real's Morata on ESPN FC.
"It's a position they need and they're going to get somebody who, in my opinion, could become world class, he's not too far off it. He's young, so he's going to be there for a long time. If you're a United fan, you're hoping this happens and I think eventually it will."
The 55-year-old then explained why the Manchester club should sign Fabinho over any other central midfield targets.
"I'd have to say he goes ahead of the majority of their players in the middle of the park," Nicol continued.
"He's coming from a team in Monaco who have a winning mentality, the guy has quality. Mourinho obviously knows him from Real Madrid, so, for me, he walks into the side. I'm not sure, other than Paul Pogba, who is ahead of him, so I think this is a no-brainer again."
Given United's struggles at left back last season, Nicol insisted that Barcelona's Alba would be an ideal target.
"If there's any chance of this happening, I would say yes (it's a no-brainer)," he added.
"But I don't see why Jordi Alba would leave Barcelona to go to Man United. If it was all about the history of the club then yes, it's a possibility. But the fact is, right now, Barcelona are streets ahead of Manchester United."
In the off-season so far, United have secured the services of only one player – centre back Victor Lindelof – but Mourinho believed to be in the market for three more players.
