Dani Alves: Why I Snubbed Pep Guardiola
Former FC Barcelona right back Dani Alves snubbed a chance to reunite with his ex-coach Pep Guardiola and now explained why.
The 34-year-old had been heavily linked with a move to Manchester City, with the Citizens confident he would join the club’s pre-season tour in the US this week.
However, an attempt at the eleventh hour by Paris Saint-Germain, who reportedly offered the Brazilian double the wages of Man City, has lured him to France.
Alves was asked why he snubbed the chance to reunite with Guardiola and apologised to his former coach.
“If Guardiola and Manchester City feel hurt by my decision, I am sorry. But I have come here to be a champion,” he said, as quoted by Sport.
“I have friends here and my wife loves the city. I was a bit selfish when I left Juventus. This time I tried to be less so and to please everyone, that’s why I decided to come here.
“If Pep feels hurt, I apologise.”
He went on to explain why he decided to snub Manchester City and instead joined the French giants.
“But above all, it's the club's unending desire to grow and to be one of the heavyweights in European and world football,” he told PSG’s official website.
“So it's not just this magnificent city that has drawn me here - this great club's ambitions are also very attractive.
“I really like the manner in which Paris Saint-Germain have marked footballing history and continue to want the same thing, signing big players and showing a lot of desire out on the pitch.
“It's the sporting side of things that really made up my mind to come here."
