In the 1990s, Manchester United were keen on adding England international Andrew Cole to their squad, but Newcastle United were not interested in selling. However, Sir Alex Ferguson managed to orchestrate an incredible deal with the Magpies, which saw them receive £7 million (R117 million) and youth product Keith Gillespie for Cole's signature.

Despite lasting only one season at FC Barcelona, Zlatan Ibrahimovic can say that he was involved in one of the biggest player plus cash deals ever. In 2009, the Spanish giants were desperate to get their hands on the Swede, and offered Inter Milan £40 million (R674 million) and Samuel Eto'o for the prolific striker.

In 2002, Juventus came knocking on Inter's door for Italy international Fabio Cannavaro. The Bianconeri were in desperate need of a commanding centre back at the time and offered their Serie A opponents £15 million (R252 million) plus goalkeeper Fabian Carini for the Italy international.

Ashley Cole's transfer to Chelsea in 2006 was probably one of the most controversial moves in the history of the Premier League. The left back angered Arsenal fans when he did everything he could to force a move to Stamford Bridge. The Gunners ended up getting £5 million (R84 million) and William Gallas for the England international.
