Sir Alex Ferguson Recalls Meeting Nelson Mandela
Legendary Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson recently recalled the time he first met the late Nelson Mandela during the Red Devils' first tour of South Africa in 1993.
The Scot, who met Madiba on a few occasions, was at the launch of a campaign for a statue of the South African statesman to be erected in Glasgow when he spoke of the first time he met the great leader, explaining why Madiba holds such a special place in his heart.
"(It lasted) 20 minutes, but for me, it lasted a lifetime, it was fantastic," Ferguson said, as quoted by The Sun.
"The remarkable thing about Nelson Mandela was his complete lack of bitterness at being imprisoned for 27 years.
"You have to be special to put to one side what he endured and suffered for over a quarter of a century and then go on to lead his country to democracy and influence his people in such a massive way."
