The opening minutes of the clash in Texas saw United trouble City's defence, although it was Guardiola's side that had the first effort on goal after eight minutes.
New Citizens signing Kyle Walker combined well with forward Sergio Aguero, who set up Raheem Sterling, forcing David de Gea to make the first save of the match.
The next 20 minutes saw both sides knock the ball around in midfield until Sterling again found himself with an opportunity to put his side ahead after 30 minutes, but was unable to convert his chance from a rebound.
With both sides threatening going forward, the deadlock was finally broken eight minutes before half-time, and it was United who went in front.
A long ball from Paul Pogba deep in midfield picked out the run of Belgian striker Lukaku, whose pace saw him round City's goalkeeper Ederson before he found the back of net from a tight angle with his left foot.
Much to the delight of United fans at the stadium, the Red Devils added their second goal just two minutes later. Henrikh Mkhitaryan ran at City’s defence down the middle of the pitch before picking out Rashford with the outside of his boot.
The England international did well to set himself up with his first touch before calmly finding the bottom corner of the goal to put United 2-0 ahead.
Half-time saw both teams make changes to their line-ups, with the likes of Leroy Sane, Brahim Diaz, Samir Nasri and John Stones entering the fray for City, while Jose Mourinho introduced the likes of Eric Bailly, Sergio Romero and Phil Jones.
City enjoyed most of the possession in the latter stages of the second half, but Pep Guardiola's men were unable to bulge the net of United's goal. The match finished 2-0 to Mourinho’s side, although both managers will have been pleased with the pre-season fixture.
