Ronaldo Leads To Portugal To First Confed Cup Win

FIFA Confederations Cup Report: Russia v Portugal 21 June 2017

By SL International - Jun 21, 2017 06:52 PM

FIFA Confederations Cup

Result: Russia 0-1 Portugal

Date: 21 June 2017

Venue: Otkrytie Arena

Cristiano Ronaldo scored the only goal of the game to hand Portugal a 1-0 win over Russia in their second FIFA Confederations Cup tie.

The Portuguese broke the deadlock in the eighth minute when Raphael Guerrero picked out Ronaldo with a superb cross and the forward headed home at the far post.

Russia, on the other hand, were finding it tough to maintain possession of the ball, which led to a lack of chances in the opening 20 minutes.

Selecao had a chance to extend their lead in the 32nd minute, but Roman Akinfeev produced a good stop to deny Ronlado from close range.

Russia carved out their first chance five minutes before the break when Golovin whipped a cross to the front post but Smolov could no turn his effort on target.

The score remained 1-0 to the European champions at the halftime break.

Five minutes into the second half, Akinfeev came to Russia's rescue as he produced a stunning reflex save to keep out Bernado Silva's header.

Ronaldo was presented with a chance to double Portugal's lead in the 62nd minute, but he failed to direct his header on target from close range.

Russia looked more threatening after 70 minutes, which saw Portugal reduced to counter attacks. Prompting Fernando Santos to introduce Gelson Martins in the 77th minute.

The hosts pushed for an equaliser in the closing stages of the second but were unable to bypass the Portugal defence.

Selecao held on for the victory and have temporarily moved top of Group A.

Lastly, to those who are capable of using their guaranteed functioning brain cells: At a competitive pro football level, one rather have 1 scoring machines rather a million score ball jugglers who score million goals WHEN it least matters for the team's claiming of glory. The short tokoloshe used to be the best in competitive pro football globally some 3-4 years back......but now he is just adding numbers both at club and National level. Again prove me wrong if you can, unless you have a lot hot air bubbles to blow.....I don't have time for that gab.

For the zillion time......this SECOND FIDDLE COW is just a LaLiga "INDUNA"......Feel free to prove me wrong.

but lol what i find funny its 90% of barca goals are tap inns or with just a keeper to beat and the man with more goals for barca its messi and yet hes not is he not a tap in specialist, while ronaldo is described as a free kick tap in and penalty specialist now let me ask again how many penalties were awarded for Barca in the past 2 years and how many did messi score?

How many times must we lecture these people about the same thing ??? Messi is one in a million....there is no one like him....he is irreplaceable. If Barça or Argentina can lose Messi,,,, where can they find another "playtation" ??? But with Cristiano there is always a Mbappe, Harry Kane e.t.c the list is endless....case closed !!!!

@@tshaka_xolisile, you people need to wake up to the fact that Argentina is a team outside Barça which Messi has been delivering outstanding performances in major tournaments for a while now. The best player of the tournament at the last WORLD CUP....the best player of the tournament twice in two consecutive Copa America. Now you tell me who has been failing the other....Argentina or Messi ??? Again with Cristiano and Portugal it's a different case which we all saw at Euro16 when Portugal did it for him while he was sitting on the bench.

@ mpho poster Messi won't peform like ronaldo at da age of 32!?! now u are retarded kid...does Messi show any signs of ageing to u???? dis guy still performs as a young star dats why more often than not when he doesn't perform his team is suffering..I do not want Messi to be on Ronaldo's level whereby he is glued in da box make himself unoticed to score easy goals nd be regarded as da best player in da world.....if Ronaldo is ur best player in da world I suggest Lewendoski nd Muller are also ur best players in sa world coz they all play da same

@@tshaka_xolisile, I can also say that Argentina are nothing without Messi and they know it. Look at how the whole country was shaken by his decision to retire at international level....but I cannot say the same thing about Cristiano with Portugal despite his age. We know that Barcelona without Messi can never be the same but Real Madrid without Cristiano can do even better.

The truth is Messi wont perfom @ Ronaldo's level when he turns 32. CR knows how to play around with his game n thats why Madrid is on top now because even the Coach Zizou is a clever coach n thy seem to comunicate well. With Port that coach is the best ever to coach Port cz others even failed during the Luiz figo n Deco generation. Port not star filled but he created a great Team spirit wth CR wining mentality rubing off

@Khasa the day Boateng was naming all difficult oponents many headles Barca fans ran naked happy that it was like Messi was the best, they ignored the last part where he said Ronaldo has changed his game and knows how to position himself n it makes it very dificult to mark him. Yesterday he showed he can stil drible if he wants but he focus more on what makes a Team win goals goals goals. Messi is amazing but CR7 is football
