South African Youngster Returns From Ajax Amsterdam – Gives Advice To Youngsters
Ajax Cape Town’s academy player, Sonwabile Mfecane, has reflected on his experience after undergoing a three-week trial with Dutch giants, Ajax Amsterdam.
The youngster left Mzansi last month after he was invited to train with Ajax, however, fell ill during his first week in the Netherlands.
Speaking to one of Ajax’s correspondents, the 17-year-old gave some insight on his trip to Amsterdam and training under the mentorship of former Ajax Amsterdam players, George Ogararu and Johnny Heitinga.
“Ja, I had a very good time, three weeks, it was very short for me. It was a good experience for me, for my football, for my football career, I think coming back to South Africa, I think I am a much better player and I got a lot of experience coming to Amsterdam,” he said.
“The level of training was very high, my first week, I first had to keep up with the team, but the last week I got better, and I think the first week for me was a set-back when I got sick, because each and every day I got better, but I imagine that if I got to train in my first week I would have done much better.”
Mfecane then went on to say that he is determined to work harder in South Africa so that he can be an improved player when he goes back to the Netherlands for the annual tour with the U19 Ajax academy players in May this year.
“There is a lot to work on still, I think me coming here made me a better player but not a complete player and I think I have a lot to work on, when I come back to South Africa I have to work harder and when I come back here in May I will be better than I was.”
The player then ended off by sharing his advice to youngsters and thanked Ajax Amsterdam for the experience.
“I think, working hard is number one. Work hard, there is always someone watching out there, if you work hard, everything will come your way, be patient. If you work hard and focus, something will come your way,” he added.
“I want to thank Ajax Amsterdam for inviting me for three weeks and for a perfect training and everything they did for me. It was great and I loved it.”
