Going into the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations, critics did not give Bafana Bafana much hope in competing with Africa’s best on the continent's biggest stage.
Despite the scepticism, Bafana proved their critics wrong and were unfortunate to be eliminated through the dreaded penalty-shoot out. The team won one, while playing to two draws in their group stage games, before playing to a 1-1 draw with Mali in the quarterfinals.
The side played some enterprising football under the guidance of coach Gordon Igesund, and made the nation proud. Igesund is pleased with the team’s Afcon campaign, heaping praise on his squad.
“We did well. It was going to be tough from the beginning looking at the group and the whole tournament. We did our best and the players showed their character to do the country proud and they did that.
“We would have loved to reach the final and lift the trophy, but things didn't go our away, but as far as I and the whole team is concerned, we did very well,” the four time PSL winning coach said.
