Chiefs To Break Their Own Record?

Chiefs To Break Their Own Record?

By Soccer-Laduma - Apr 02, 2013 12:12 PM

If current PSL leaders Kaizer Chiefs can pick up just 14 more points in their league campaign this season, they will break the record for the highest points total in the PSL, in its current format.

Just over a decade ago the Absa Premiership decided to cut the roster by two teams, leaving 16 clubs to battle it out for the trophy, creating a more competitive league.

Since that decision, made ahead of the 2002/03 season, the highest points total achieved in the PSL was in the 2003/04 campaign, when Chiefs claimed the title with an impressive 63-point haul.

Under Stuart Baxter the Amakhosi have been a force to be reckoned with, picking up 50 points in their first 23 games, giving them a good chance of toppling their own record.

Should Chiefs win all of their remaining games, then they will end the season on 71 points, four points short of the all-time PSL record set by Mamelodi Sundowns during the 18-team Absa Premiership, back in the 1998/99 and 1999/2000 seasons.

However, while it seems unlikely that Baxter’s men will win all seven of their remaining games, they only have to win four and draw two of them in order to hit 64 points and set a new record.
