Gerrard: Respect Centurion Cole

Gerrard: Respect Centurion Cole

Ashley Cole is arguably the best left-back ever to represent England, although he is being given a run for his money by Leighton Baines at this stage of his career.

And Chelsea star Cole’s remarkable longevity at the top flight is set to be recognised on Wednesday night.

If he takes to the field against Brazil at Wembley, Cole will win his 100th cap for the Three Lions.

Despite his obvious talent, Cole has often been seen as a pantomime villain by the England faithful, who have only ever given him their reserved support.

However, England skipper Steven Gerrard- who won his own century of caps late last year- hopes Cole will be warmly received by Wembley this time around.

Gerrard believes that on the occasion of his 100th cap, Cole should be recognised for his excellent contribution to England’s cause.

"I think it's very important the Wembley crowd respect what Ashley has done for England,” Gerrard said.

"I think if the fans take a moment and have a think of what Ashley Cole has given in an England shirt over the last 10 or 12 years, it has been phenomenal.

"He's probably been the most consistent player I've played with during my time. It's going to be Ashley's night, if he's picked to play, and the players are certainly going to show him a hell of a lot of support. Let's hope the fans do as well."

Meanwhile, 81-cap defender Rio Ferdinand has not given up on his own chances of reaching the century milestone for his country.

Manchester United stopper Ferdinand has not played for the Three Lions since his brother was racially abused by former England skipper, John Terry.

At 34-years-old his chances of a recall are surely unlikely, but Rio says he would  jump at the chance to represent England again.

"The manager hasn't picked me but if I got picked I'd pack my bags and go straight there,” Rio said.

"I'm no different to anyone else. I love playing for England. If I'm not then I'll keep doing what I'm doing for Manchester United.”

Oratiles: Cole, Young, Welbeck, Sturridge, Sterling, Johnson, Lescott are all black players who have been selected by Hodgson for England. What does skin colour have to do with Rio not being selected?

Cole is one of the best in the world, behind the likes of Maldini

Rio must forget. That Roy is a fool. He won't select him based on his skin colour & for as long as Terry plays for England. That's the reality
