Champs League, World Cup Matches Fixed

Champs League, World Cup Matches Fixed

European police say that an 18-month long investigation has exposed match-fixing at the highest level of European and global football.

Europol investigators claim that as many as 380 matches across Europe were fixed by a crime syndicate based in Asia.

From  their base in The Hague, Europol assert match officials, club officials, players and criminals are all implicated in the corruption.

Without revealing the specific games, Europol say matches in World Cup and European Championship qualifiers, two Champions League ties and "several top football matches in European leagues" were fixed.

The investigators allege that as much as €16million was spent on illegal bets by criminals on the fixed matches, and that they fear this sum is just the “tip of the iceberg.”

"This is the work of a suspected organised crime syndicate based in Asia and operated with criminal networks around Europe," Rob Wainwright, the director of Europol, said.

"It is clear to us this is the biggest-ever investigation into suspected match-fixing in Europe. It has yielded major results which we think have uncovered a big problem for the integrity of football in Europe. We have uncovered an extensive criminal network."
