Wits Set To Meet Bucs In Final
27 November 2011
Telkom Knockout
Date: 27 November 2011
Teams: Wits 3-0 Santos
Venue: Bidvest Stadium
Under bright sunlight at the Bidvest Stadium the home team saw off Santos 3-0 to book themselves a spot in the Telkom Knockout final.
During the first 45 minutes Wits did have the better of the play but had to wait until the second half to break the deadlock.
After a cagey opening the game saw it’s first real chance midway through the half when Wit’s Sifiso Myeni struck the underside of the cross bar with a free kick.
The pressure continued from the Clever Boys as Asive Langwe was wasteful in front of goal after the ball flashed across the face from the left.
A dodgey offside call against Ryan Chapman resulted in a yellow card for the striker as he played the ball away after the whistle.
Just before the half hour mark Santos created their first decent chance but Jonathan Armogam clipped the ball just over the bar after his team hit on the break.
Sustained pressure from The Clever Boys finally paid dividends on 53 minutes as Asive Langwe was in the right place to direct how a ball played across the face of goal by the dangerous Ryan Chapman.
Chapman, who had been relatively quiet in the first half, extended his side’s lead ten minutes later after a lapse of concentration by Santos defender Pere Ariweriyai. After collecting the ball Chapman muscled his way into space before lashing a shot past the keeper.
Santos tried their best to get back into the game and Vuyisile Wana went close on 65 minutes. Desperate for goals The People’s Team left themselves open to the counter and were eventually punished during stoppage time.
Absent for large spells of this season, Sifiso Vilikazi put his name on the scoresheet after finding enough room to toe-poke the ball past Tshepo Motsoeneng in the Santos goal.
Wits will be now be looking to make it a hat trick of wins in the Telkom Knockout Cup when they face Orlando Pirates in two weeks time.
