PSL Clubs To Boycott Bafana Mini-Camp?
14 December 2012
Word reaching the Siya crew is that some PSL coaches could be weighing up the possibility of boycotting the Bafana Bafana training camp later this month, in favour of giving their players a break.
Coach Gordon Igesund recently called up his squad to face Malawi in an international friendly on the 22nd of this month, also revealing that they plan to have an extra Bafana mini-camp from the 27th to the 30th of December.
The final PSL game before the African Cup of Nations break will be played on December 19, just three days before the Malawi game, following that the players will only get a few days rest until they leave for the camp.
In addition to that, PSL clubs are said to have received an email from SAFA stating that the governing body will hold no responsibility for any injuries that players pick up during their spell on international duty.
Interestingly, with the Malawi game not being an official FIFA date, PSL sides are well within their rights to stop their players from attending the friendly completely, should they so wish. However, it is thought that they are likely to try and come to an agreement that will see them play in the friendly, but not attend the camp.
Igesund is set to name his final 23-man squad for Africa’s showpiece on December 30th, and will then lead his side out against Norway and Algeria in their last two games before the tournament begins.
Should Bafana do well in the Afcon and reach the final on the 10th, players of Kaizer Chiefs, Mamelodi Sundowns and Maritzburg United will have just two days before returning to PSL duty on the 12th, giving them very little time, if any, to recover.
