Pirates And Swallows Deadlocked

02 November 2011

Pirates v Swallows

ABSA Premiership

Result: Orlando Pirates 1-1 Moroka Swallows

Venue: Orlando Stadium

Referee: Charl Theron

Date: 2 November 2011

Moroka Swallows and Orlando Pirates drew1-1 in an ABSA Premiership match at the Orlando Stadium in Soweto. A 30th minute wonder strike from David Mathebula was cancelled out by Happy Jele’s 93rd minute header.

The match got underway as the opening five minutes were end-to-end action but neither side managed to really test the goalkeepers.

The match took on a physical approach as both sides put in menacing challenges.

The first chance of the match fell to Bongani Ndulula in the 16th minute as Tlou Segolela played him in on goal but his shot was saved by an on rushing Greg Etafia.

Ruben Cloete picked up an injury after being on the receiving end of Rudi Isaacs’ tackle and was replaced by Sibusiso Mxoyana in the 21st minute.

Ndulula found some space outside the area in the 25th minute and hit a powerful drive that was parried over the bar by Etafia.

Mxoyana was struggling at left back after coming on as the Birds looked to exploit the Buccaneers’ weakness.

Mathebula did just that on the half hour mark with a majestic strike. Siyabonga Nomvete laid the ball across the pitch picking out Mathebula, who made no mistake and hit a thunderous 30 yard strike, leaving Moeneeb Josephs with no chance.

Pirates’ defence was in shambles as Swallows went for the jugular but Ashraf Hendricks failed to hit the target with his header.

The first-half came to a close as Swallows’ good run of form seemed to be continuing.

The second-half got underway as Pirates began the half they seemed tentative to attack the Birds as they risked conceding another.

The opening ten minutes of the second-half were battled in the centre of the park.

Oupa Manyisa lined up a long range shot in the 58th minute but his shot went high and wide.

Etafia was almost caught off his line in the 61st minute as Chansa went for a long range chip but the ‘keeper did well to deflect the ball over the cross bar.

Pirates continued to struggle as they resorted to long balls that do not suit their style of play.

Substitute Tokelo Rantie hit a low drive in the 73rd minute but his strike was just the wrong side of the post.

Pirates found space in the Swallows area in the 78th minute but Oupa Manyisa’s first touch was too strong allowing Giorgi Nergadze time to make a goal saving challenge.

The Buccaneers’ best opportunity of the match fell to Rantie in the 80th minute. Segolela pulled the ball back across the face of goal but Rantie missed the target from close range.

Happy Jele equalised in the 93rdminute as he got his head on Segolela’s cross earning the Bucs a valuable point.

Pirates: Moeneeb Josephs, Happy Jele, Rooi Mahamutsa, Siyabonga Sangweni, Ruben Cloete 21’(Sibusiso Mxoyana), Rudolf Bester, Benson Mhlongo 70’(Sibusiso Mngumi), Oupa Manyisa, Tlou Segolela, Isaac Chansa, Bongani Ndulula 56’(Tokelo Rantie).

Mxoyana was thrown into the deep and Swallows exploited our left side. This was very wrong by our coach to expose the boy. Substitutes of this manner destroy talent.

@significant, point taken swai-swai but most people thought the MIGHTY will just pick up were they left of under Krol and they will and teams employ new tactics when playing BUCS...u hav 2 admit tht to most teams use us as a yard-stick to gauge their performance and that gives them a false sense of supremacy so swai-swai lam' learn from other teams who have been in ur position before you and failed and thts why I'm stil sayin "umlilo wa maphepha" but on the other hand BUCS are used to having things the hard way, we're warriors and underestimate them at ur peril...but all in all swai-swai no disrespect was intended, its all in the name of the beautiful game**tse ntsho**the BUCS of LONDON(and out)
