Nelson Mandela Challenge
Result: Bafana 0-1 Zambia
Date: 14 November 2012
Venue: Soccer City
A wondergoal from Collins Mbesuma saw Bafana Bafana slump to a 1-0 loss to African champions Zambia in the Nelson Mandela Challenge on Wednesday.
Former Bafana assistant coach Thomas Madigage was honoured before the game got underway with a touching moment of silence at Soccer City.
The first period proved to be a tough affair with majority of the game stuck in midfield as some fierce battles ensued.
The South Africans tried to find an early goal with a sweeping move but Thabo Nthethe saw his cross from the right cut out before it could find Lerato Chabangu.
Nunes then had his first set-piece of the night moments later and he whipped it on target, but it was straight at Kennedy Mweene who punched it clear.
Jacob Mulenga responded with a powerful shot that sailed well wide after the ball was lost by Dean Furman while Bernard Parker lashed a long-range strike just wide.
Isaac Chansa powered a shot straight at Itumeleng Khune in the 12th minute while Mayuka curled a superb free-kick narrowly wide at the other end.
The hosts then suffered a major blow when Rantie was stretchered off the pitch and down the tunnel in the 28th minute, with Katlego Mashego coming on in his place.
Bafana were chasing their opponents but slowly came back into the game with Chabangu firing just over before Mulenga's shot was deflected wide.
Khune needed to deny Mulenga two minutes later to prevent his backward header from finding the back of the net while Furman made a crucial tackle to stop Katongo late in the half as the game remained goalless.
Mashego enjoyed an early chance in the second period but saw his volley from the left fly off target while he had an even better chance in the 52nd minute but his first-time shot ballooned over.
Both sides rang the changes which slowed the game down slightly but Zambia still looked dangerous in possession. The decisive moment then arrived in the 64th minute with a thunderous strike from Mbesuma found the top corner - giving Khune no chance.
Chamanga then went close to a second in the 76th minute when he beat Thabo Nthethe in the area but he couldn't get his shot off.
Mweene had to make a fingertip save to deny Furman at the other end while Teko Modise saw his deflected strike go just wide.
The game got off to a frantic finish with Mbesuma denied a penalty after it seemed that his heels were clipped by the Bafana captain while Mweene made a crucial save to deny Kermit Erasmus before Chabangu's effort on the follow up was deflected over from close range.
Zambia slowed the game down in the final few minutes and saw out the result to win the Nelson Mandela Challenge.
