Mbalula: Bafana Bafana Must Qualify

05 February 2013

Bafana Bafana has not qualified for a major international tournament since 2008, although South Africa has hosted the 2010 FIFA World Cup and 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in that time period, allowing them to compete in the respective competitions.

South Africa’s Minister of Sport, Fikile Mbalula, has urged the national team to start qualifying for these major footballing events. The minister says that the country need to focus on its development structures, and qualify for the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

“Our urgent intervention to deliver this is of high importance by all of us, with the Brazil world cup taking place. Bafana Bafana and authorities must understand that there is no FIFA plan B for South Africa to host the event if Brazil is not hosting.

“Like other teams, Bafana Bafana must qualify, and for this to happen, we must execute  our responsibilities for the better of this code of sport in the country.  We have started the building blocks on a positive note and can see a ray of hope looming large in the horizon.

“We need to draw our lessons from this Afcon tournament as we prepare for the qualifiers of the FIFA World Cup 2014 in Brazil. But we need to urgently work on an overall and comprehensive long term strategy for scientific athlete development plan.

“Arising from lessons drawn from this Afcon and our assessment of the general capabilities and short-comings of our team, the Ministry of Sport and Recreation of South Africa will join hands with SAFA in addressing the areas which will help the team to qualify for world tournaments," Mbalula concluded.

Mr Minister, you have missed the point. Our PSL League is not competitve. Since 1996 when PSL teams were reduced to 16 from 18, the standard of PSL in terms of play deterioted. To remind others, when Orlando Pirates won Champions in 1995, PSL teams were 18. When Bafana won AFCON in 1996, PSL teams were 18. Mr Minister, South Africa has a population of over 50 million. Players playing professional soccer in the PSL are less than 500 bearing in mind that we have foreigners in all PSL teams. This is working against bafana bafana. Mr Minister, if you want bafana bafana to be the world beaters, we need to increase the number of teams playing in PSL from 16 to 20. We will have a bigger pool of players who can play for our national team.
