Masango Brace Downs Swallows

18 February 2012

Mandla Masango

ABSA Premiership

Date: 18 February 2012

Teams: Moroka Swallows – Kaizer Chiefs

Venue: FNB Stadium

Referee: Gabriel Sekopo

Mandla Masango scored either side of the break as Kaizer Chiefs clinically defeated Moroka Swallows 3-0 at the FNB Stadium on Saturday.

After scoring against Jomo Cosmos in midweek Lehlohnolo Majoro looked to continue his form early on and managed to eke out a shot in the eighth minute, but it flew just over the net.

Chiefs got the opener on 25 minutes when Masango's mistimed shot trickled over the line. The Swallows defenders failed to close down the midfielder who ran onto George Lebese's cross before poking it past a diving Greg Etafia and over the line via the inside of the post. Replays suggested Bennett Chenene may have got the last touch, but Masango remained credited with the goal.

With ten minutes to play Siyabonga Nomvete had a great chance to equalise when he was played into space, but his final touch to get around Khune was too heavy and the striker failed to get a suitable angle with which to shoot. Just seconds later Swallows were again threatening and should have scored, but Makhanya's thunderous effort came rattling back off the crossbar.

Swallows' misses were then punished as Bernard Parker went racing down the left and tried his luck with a speculative effort from outside the area. Etafia was off his line, but managed to palm it away. However, it only went as far as Majoro who netted his second goal in as many matches.

Immediately after the break, Swallows looked to fight back and another strong shot from Nomvete forced Khune into a save. At the other end it was Masango who produced a strong driving effort, but it went just wide of Etafia's goal.

Chiefs got the third on the hour when Masango finished a well-worked move which involved numerous passes between the Amakhosi players.  It should have been four just a minute later, but Lebes'’s thunderous shot was palmed onto the crossbar by Etafia.

The win takes Chiefs up to second place on 32 points, still two behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, while The Dube Birds remain on 29 points.
